| At what age do you think people should be legally allowed to do things? Do you think changing the laws would change anything?
Sex - 16 (I'd like to say 18 but it would be pointless)
Smoking - 21 (It's still a drug of choice and if you have to hold off till then you are more mature to weigh up the facts)
Drinking - Also 21 | |

| In my experience, people take very little notice of the law when it comes to smoking, drinking and sex. | |

| I think the concept of a "Legal Age" to do things is rather pointless. Young people do things when they want to - or as soon as they believe they can get away with it. Those over the "Legal Age" try to contain them but can't. Most of the time kids actually get away with it which encourages them and their peers to "accomplish" more. So, why not encourage those in authority to concentrate on the subjects that do really matter. | |

| Maybe scrapping the legal age altogether for smoking inparticular would make youngsters LESS likely to do it? I think so ...
I think half of the reason teenagers take up smoking is because they know it is wrong, the health issues are just a side effect ... take away the "wrong to do it" part and your just left with the health problems which aint much fun at all.
Just my opinion, I know I never started smoking because the prospect of lung cancer looked "cool", I started because I thought doing something bad looked "cool"

| I did it all underage so much that by the time i was of legal age i was bored wit hit all....
Didnt stop me carrying on doing them though........
And i agree, all kids do things to stick one in the eye of authority, and just because society says its wrong, well, thats just a carrot dangling to a kid...

| I think you only have to look at a country like France, where the laws on alcohol are way more relaxed than here. Kids are brought up drinking alcohol in the home, with meals etc ... but at the same time in moderation. With that they learn to "respect" the alcohol and the effects it can have. Going out drinking at an early age with friends probably doesn't happen as much because alcohol is nothing special / new / dangerous. It would be like going out on a Friday night to eat toast with your mates. Countrys don't see the binge drinking problems we do here in the UK for these kind of reasons. Saying that though, relaxing the alcohol laws here NOW would make no difference as the drinking "culture" is already in place. Now thats the last bit of thinking I'm doing tonight ... time for a lager | |

| True Bee, I've had that discussion before on a different forum, when we go to Paris we sit among thousands of teenagers on the Champs Du Mars of an evening, they sit around in groups eating, drinking and playing guitar etc....Not once do they get rowdy, angry, stumbling drunk....they are happy, friendly and even clear away their litter before they leave. Could you imagine that here in the UK? | |

| I too don't think changing age limits will make a difference, expecially in this day and age where no one has respect for the law, where the law itself can't be arsed, and also where the law has no real power anyway due to too many do gooders. The only one that may work is the drinking age, in as much as it will make it more difficult for people to get into pubs and clubs, it just won't stop them from going to an off licence though. The older i have gotten and the less and less i have drank (to the point of tee-total, apart from one week a year), the higher i have wanted this age to be. Having to stand in a pub while a group 18yr olds who can't handle a pint are running round like kids on christmas morning is enough to ruin a night out i think. Plus i think it may reduce the amount of violence in town centers.....slightly | |
