Subject: Hero Left To Die After Stopping Knife Attack. Sun Apr 25, 2010 2:57 pm
A homeless man who was stabbed while saving a woman from a knife-wielding attacker was left dying in a pool of his own blood for over an hour as pedestrians walked by.
CCTV footage shows people stopping to stare at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax as he lay dying on the pavement.
The surveillance video, obtained by the New York Post, also shows a man coming out of a nearby building and taking a photograph on his mobile phone then walking away.
Finally, a man who stopped and shook Mr Tale-Yax saw his wounds when he rolled him over.
Firefighters were called and arrived 15 minutes later - an hour and 20 minutes after the good samaritan collapsed.
By then the 31-year-old was dead.
The attack happened in the New York borough of Queen's almost a week ago but police did not have a clear idea of what happened until they saw the CCTV footage.
The video shows Mr Tale-Yax approaching the man. The attacker then appears to turn and stab him, but most of the vision is outside of the camera's view.
The attacker and the victim are seen fleeing in different directions, Mr Tale-Yax runs a few paces but then falls to the pavement where he lay until his death.
Mr Tale-Yax's cousin, Edwin Tacam, told the New York Post the homeless hero would not have left anyone to die.
"That shouldn't have happened, Hugo wouldn't have done that," he said.
"He lost his life trying to help someone else. That's brave. He was a hero."
Police are now trying to find the victim and the assailant
