Ms Sian Massey suffered the horrible collision during Cardiff City’s 3-0 defeat at home to Middlesbrough on Bank Holiday Monday but managed to dust herself down before giving a wry smile and continuing her officiating duties accordingly by awarding a goal-kick to the visitors.

McNaughton was racing to keep the ball on in the 62nd minute and running full-pelt was seemingly unable to stop himself smashing into the on-watching female linesman.

Massey was duly swept off her feet as her head flung backwards before landing on all fours on the turf. Surprisingly, McNaughton did little to console or aid Ms Massey, but McNaughton’s agent John Viola has since moved to squash any rumours that the Cardiff City hardman did the act deliberately

When queried on why the Cardiff number 2 did not aid Ms Massey on her feet, nor has he made moves to apologize, Viola insisted that McNaughton only had his mind on what turned out to be a critical match for theBluebirds

He should have helped her up ( or, at the very least, apologised ). Not because she's female but because he's just pushed her down. It's a courtesy that should be extended to anyone. To my mind sexism is irrelevant the question is simply, where the fuck are his manners?

They are footballers turnip, above the law and beyond having any sense of manners or the correct way to act, that most of the peasants (that pay their wages) would take as a given.

Footballers these days are taken at a very early age and secluded from the rest of society. Most of them live, train and are schooled at the academies, have absolutely every thing done for them and are payed stupid amounts of money (and this is just the 15 and 16 year olds). They are basically taught that they can walk over anybody and that if they do fuck up, somebody from the club will be on hand to wipe their arse.

I know they're ill mannered fuckin oiks but the question still applies..
Had it been a male official no more would have been heard about it, as its a female official much is made of it..

And I expect Sian Massey thinks exactly the same..

Do they aplogise if they knock over a male ref/linesman? If they do then he should have, If they don't then he's correct.

What a ridiculous position... being a footballer doesn't give you the right to be a twat even if you spread it out evenly; No, he shouldn't treat her differently but your logic is backwards, he should help / apologise to anyone he knocks down.

Not only does your approach maintain sexism it excuses the underlying issue. How can we move forward if we think that way?

Manner aside the question was should he have helped her up. Going by what the players normally do that is the precedent set.

There are 2 sides to this story. One side plays the game the other maintains the rules. Massy in this case was a linesman she had to watch the lines and maintain the rules.

This is the other side to the story: She also could have moved either side to avoid being hit without comprimising her sight of the line or the ball crossing it. Tennis line judges move to avoid being hit by the ball or any object flung their way.

Sexism this is is not and is not in the equation.

If he had knocked her down in the carpark, then the situation would have called for his apology. This incident occured in an active game. The continuation of the game is the chief importance at play here not manners.

You see players gob and swear on pitch, so I would not expect their manners to be impecable.

Can you imagine the carnage if the players started aplogising. Oh I'm awfully sorry goalie did I kick the ball toohard. Oh dear chap I seem to have muddied your shorts. Sorry, my tackle seems to have landed you on your rump.I say old bean my bad I kicked the ball at your gonads. I must go to specsavers.

Geebus wept the whole industry would be in disarray. Law knows what if the Rugby plyers started apologising, oops semed to have given you a cabbage ear, his my plastic surgeon he should sort you out in a jiffy.

Let alone Ice hockey, the outcry if they started apologising to alland sunder. Sorry goalie I have to whack this and get in the net, do be so kind as to move aside so I do not accidently injure you.

I've been smacked round the head by a stray hockey bat. I didn't get an apology neither, did I expect one while the game was in play.

How or why you've decided to put manners aside in a question of manners befuddles me but you know that normality is not a valid justification, especially in minority groups.

Yes, she could have moved, fair enough, but you must have experienced the "pavement dance" and realise the implications of replacing the relatively fixed trajectory of a tennis ball with a person. The most sensible option is for the stationary party to remain stationary.

I don't actually agree that the game is more important but, even if it were, he was already out of the action because of the incident anyway and it wouldn't have taken more than 10 seconds to apologise.

I didn't put manners aside. I said that the precendant is what they do in areas like that. As in if they collide and carry on that is the expected behaviour. If they stop say sorry then that is it.

The norm sems to be to carry on and for those in the collison line to move slightly without comprisiming the intergrity of their task.

I've never seen any sports person, stop and apologise for knocking into or at any umpire. I've seen plenty of refs KO in the boxing ring and not one sorry in the ring. Apologises come after, not during.

It's normal for murderers to commit murder, it doesn't mean that they should continue to do so.
