PostSubject: What is racist or racial?   Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:57 pm

The Lawernece case ahs certiainly raised a few issues and complexitys.

What do you consider racist, is it beign called a white man/woman, Black man/woman or any other colour rather than just using man/woman?

Who do you think is more racist or racially biased?

Has the reace card gone made and been played too many times that it has devalued the situation?

Is racism just down to colour or more willdy applied liberally or otherwise to other areas, religiions, view points, culture etc?

Is saying a brown envelope, black coffee really racist or just political correctness gone stupid?

I worked for a firm and we had a list of things we were not permitted to use in the work place. These included the obvious things like these below and other that seemed a bit to far off the mark.
Wog
Golliwog
Paki
Chinky
Spink
Brown
Black
Indian
coloured
Afro
Short
Stunted
midget
dwarf
bald
fat
thin
yellow
coffee
slitty eye
N - word
rasta
turban
arab
bans
cans
blue
cabbage
spastic
flids
sambo
fliptops
charlies
chocolate
coons
gay
lesbos
dykes
cookys
curry
flippos
goldburghs
grease
spades
aces
darkies
dark
night
midnight
jet
ities
jew
polacks
rag
ruskie
zambo

We were allowed to say:
White, cream, pale, milk, milky, ,Brit, lout, thug, whitey,trash....

So I could order white envelopes but not brown envelopes. I couldn't say black coffee but could say white caffinated product.

The list for the banned grew daily, it read more like a dictionary. More ludricous. Worse I could be called the white bird in reference by persons of a differing persuasion to oneself.

Where was the sense in that surely if calling somebody black is considered black, then why is calling somebody white ok?

I have to be honest, I do not believe a lot of the words on your list but I guess I don't have to.

Regardless, I find it most interesting that, considering the rest of the list, you decide that the word "nigger" is too bad to type, even in this context; To some extent I guess this demonstrates one of the biggest problems we face with racism - fear of expression even in discussion...

In my opinion, the key underlying points are that nobody has the right not to be offended and, at the same time, if one cannot be nice one should fuck off.

I hatee the N word, not for what it is just find in a totally repulsive word. I have other similar repulsive words that I don't say or write and do not allowed to said in my house. That is my choice and my rule in my domain.

Believe or not that is not the issue here. That was the state of affairs in that particular place of work, where the workforce was of mixed origins. That was the recomened list of words to ensure racially harmony and not incite or even prooke in the merest suggestion racism.

Some of those who were of mixed orgins, found the list ludricous. The point mostly argued was.. Black is a colour and just that. Any word can be used or turned into something nasty or racist it is the tone and context used not the word itself.

Sorry, not for what it is ...? You dislike the word itself?

Of course it is your choice and isn't really a big deal but phonetically "nigger" isn't much different to "bigger" and obviously it's structure is ... what ... 80% - 85% ( my brain refuses to work ) the same; Is that ~15%, that single primary sound really enough to ban a word?

In relation to your last point, as you know, "nigger" only really means black ( comes from the Latin ) and is a perfect example ( just like almost every racial slur I can think of ) of a word being "turned". Am I misunderstanding or is a sort of double standard being introduced here?

Either way the words really are not the problem and to introduce a 'person of colour'- list of words is not only ridiculous but, in my view, more damaging.

Although I've sort of suggested that there is nothing wrong with "nigger", I don't like the word either but I think that we tend to get too hung up on the name-calling, causing offence has become like a phobia in otherwise mostly rational people and it harms the real discussion ( which is really about xenophobia ).

Its a replusive word, end of for me. and yes I do ban in in my house. Just because it sounds like bigger doesn not make the word any sweeter. The word is replusive to me and yes it is my right to deny its usage in my home. Same as I do for smoking, smoke outside not inside. My house my rules.

We all have quirks and that is mine a disgusting word, made worse by its context and usage which is to demean and insult.

It is (latin) Niger = black colour, not the n word. Pronouced N-eye jar , Niger is also a variant of the old spainish term negro pronouched nay cro. NOT the n word that is a bastardisation of english slang used for derogative purposes only.

When any word is used for the purpose of purposely demeaning a person it is offencive and any word can be used thus.

Calm down, I'm not trying to deny you your 'right' to ban language ... Only understand the - you have to admit, rather tenuous - reasoning ( not that you have to explain yourself to me, just I thought this was a conversation ).

Anyway, we can argue the etymology of the word but, as is the way with language, common usage dictates meaning and "nigger" really isn't a nice word - I think everyone understands that. However, it is still only a word ... No, I never like being called a "nigger" but my concern is that, as I've said, all we seem to do is promote some kind of Newspeak and pretend everything is okay, while, all the time, ignoring the real problem(s)... And we wonder why we're still having this frankly pathetic problem to this day!

Social stigma do not just evaporate, they are worked through and demonstrated to be fallacious.

P.s - it also sounds like "digger" grin

I think if I was any calmer I'd be sound asleep. LMFAO@ digger. Are you going to work your way through the alphabet. lol! Note I didn't edit your N word usage out, Only I refarianed form using it, each to theri own but it istill is a repulsive word.

Very true brushing under the carpet only goes to make a bigger lump under it. Too much a sue sue culture who like to use any excuse to sue or weild a can't do that card. Where is the humanity? Obslete in the dust pile under the carpet along side common sense and give and take.

We get lists given of words not to use so not to upset folk, that and stupid time wasting go team meetings. Pisses us off more the yay our teams so bonded we're all glued right up tight. Saves on an asses being sued so we don't say what the word list of the month says.

On words I hate ho has the be right up there. Yo ho cmon over here, come see what daddys got for ya. Heard too often being yelled out of some jackass punk crusing around with his homies. Jees shut it already I aint no ho and I aint interested in what yo have.

While some people use race cards there will always be racial issues arising. Tolerance, my Mam says, cost nothing, its a good word so spread it around freely.

To be honest, I only had "snigger" and "niggle" left before I'd have to go to words like "outrigger" and that would just be silly ... I'm glad you know I'm only playing and that I respect your point of view. lol!

What I really don't understand is why we tend to draw such arbitrary lines of division; If I may posit that more often than not this sort of stigma is born from our desire to belong [ to one group or another ] then are we really that primitive as to set ourselves up against so many rather than unite?

Evidently...

I sometimes wonder how faith in 'our perfect God' remains when we were so clearly a mistake.

Ha, "I aint no ho", I like that.

Although I know that I'm being a bit petit here, I have to say that there's something about "tolerance" that annoys me; I think it's the permissive side of it, the idea that someone else needs your permission to be themselves. Especially when it's something like race which, after all, is only an accident of birth... I apologise already but come on.

No worries. you missed tigger the famous bouncing tiger.

We are primative in the way we behave or misbehave more to the point. This current behaviour is like that of a small child, wanting a sweet and playing up to get it. Sad really that the 5 ins of fame is such a lure to some and to other the sue sue get rich quick the other. Society is broken, not all but a majority of it and its that part that is ruining it for everybody to enjoy others, be them locals or otherwise.

Why people can't see it fun to learn about others and engage in wider avenues than to trash, trivalise, ban or sue it to death.

Glad you liked it. Not so likeable when some homy is hanging it out the window, trying to git ya for his seatcover.

Kinda wish you could spray them with personality juice., and all other twats for that matter too.

My Sis hates the word Doll and Wench, she thinks that its as bad being called a bitch.

I think that although abuse is the outward and apparent sign of an arsehole it is only that and as such action on it, while not useless, isn't really going to get us anywhere.
