Powering the Earth Empty
PostSubject: Powering the Earth   Powering the Earth Icon_minitimeMon Oct 05, 2009 2:32 am

Ocean power is oneof the rare sources of energy that is reliable, predictable as well as dispatchable.Based on well understood principles of hydrodynamics and electrical engineering, ocean energy is an abundant, predictableand renewable resource.
The ocean power technologies have been in practice since hundreds of years. The tides and marine currents are calculated to be 832 times denser than the air flowing over wind turbines and are predictable up to the minute, at least 100 years in
advance. Therefore the ocean energies are guaranteed to deliver high output
indefinitely.

The tidal power of the oceans is tapped in twoways. The Dams are based on using a barrage at abay or estuary with a large tidal range. In dams, power is generated primarily at ebb tides as the barrage creates a significant head of water. Tidal turbines take advantage of fast-flowing ocean currents to create energy. The most
prolific tidal turbines are horizontal axis turbines that in many ways are
analogous to wind turbines. He size is a difference. Tidal turbines generating
1 MW of power can be up to one-third the size of a wind turbine with a similar
generating capacity.
Ocean Turbine power can go a long way in powering the earth, as it is estimated that 0.2% of the ocean's untapped energy could power the entire world.

An interesting concept, not really much to debate though.....if it works it works? Anything that produces healthy energy is very welcome, so much better than Nuclear power! Powering the Earth 151682

BUT!!!!!

What people forget or overlook as in politicians case. Most of the components needed for these 'green' energy's, consume or are made out of 'un'-green materials. Such is the irony.

Nuclear is clean energy, but the byproduct of this is the spent radioactive materials.

Ocean energy yes is clean, but what will the effect on the ocean by. As in tide and wave changes, marine changes etc. Think of what happens when you put an obstacle in water, the water changes to get round the object. The ocean is a pretty big puddle of water. What environmental damage to the coast will be created.

To power the earth, it has to be affordable. With the power company's behind it, This will never happen. Profit out weighs 'green' any day.

For example, who can afford to buy a wind turbine, or solar panels to power their own home? That is severing the grid connection so you provide it all for yourself.

Another point now I come to think of it, how would they be able to sink the turbines or waterwheels or whatever you would call them? The Atlantic ocean is far too deep in most places and the materials would not be able to sustain the pressure of the water. If they were anchored down they would also be a hazard to shipping or submarines. They wouldn't just build one so it would be like crossing a mine field, even worse if a boat went adrift.

Most tidal turbines, float. It still creates a dam effect. Other's do sit like bridge legs. Again interrupting the water course.

Your point show the problem, these things alter what is already established and nobody has gone on to investigate what the effect will be further down the line. Typical of many of these 'go-green' spurts. All got to do this but no actual forward thinking just the now and sod it mentality.

Another thing missed in all this go green is the blame it on car users, typical the larger car users or 4x4 brigade. When not one of these enivomentals look at the whole. 1 cow produces more CO than 175, 4X4's. Shouldn't the cutting the crap start with the biggest polluters? Not target the car drivers who are only hit because the government want you on public transport not for an world saving mission.
