Eyes full of dirt and only her wired-up muzzle poking above ground, this is the miracle dog who somehow survived being buried alive by a twisted yob.


The helpless female crossbreed, named Star by her rescuers, had also been shot 40 times in the head with a pellet gun and had her legs bound together with shoelaces.

Animal welfare officers in Malta were investigating a tip-off about three dogs being held in a cage when they heard muffled whimpering. They found Star in her horrific burial pit - covered by a wooden board weighted down with a tree stump.

She was taken for emergency surgery at the Ta' Qali Hospital in Ghar Hasan, near Birzebbuga.

Vet Trevor Zammit said: "We had to spoon out pellets from under her skin. The person who shot her didn't do so accidentally because she was shot from quite close range





"She probably moved while the aggressor was shooting her, luckily missing her brain."

As traumatised Star recovers in an animal rescue centre, police are hunting the callous thug responsible for her sickening ordeal.

Her plight has sparked calls for urgent reform of the country's animal welfare laws and touched hearts around the world.





People in Venezuela and Barbados have joined Facebook pages dedicated to finding her attacker, and she has been sent cash for vets bills and letters of support from Canada and Holland.

Malta Animal Welfare said: "Star's doing her utmost to make it through this heartbreaking situation."

Poor animal. It is horrible to make undergo it in an animal. These people there have nothing human.

I don't care what your views are on teh death penalty or even if you feel it means we stoop to their level, or even if we ethically have the right to decide such a fate of another human (not that they are).
