Bollards shaped as children have been erected outside a primary school in Leicester to try slow down speeding drivers. The 3ft-high statues are meant to fool motorists into thinking the bollards are children about to cross the road.
Leicester City Council's Patrick Kitterick told Sky News Online they were put up because normal signs were not enough.
"These bollards were a little bit different. Usually motorists are
told that a school is nearby by one of those red triangle signs with
children on them.
"But to be perfectly frank many people do ignore them unfortunately. This was a way of catching people's attention."
Some have complained the bollards are like creatures out of horror films.
Councillor Kitterick admitted: "The design can be a little bit scary but the key thing is to grab attention."
According to one newspaper report, one bollard has already been knocked down.
The RAC told Sky News Online that there was a risk "the statues will
become a distraction with drivers focussing on them rather than the
road ahead."
The council said that the road already had a 20-mile-an-hour zone in place to prevent accidents.
The bollards cost £350 each to install - far cheaper than a speed
camera. If the scheme is successful it will be rolled out across the
city.
