Sir Jimmy Savile was larger than life even at his own funeral, carried into Leeds Cathedral by the Royal Marines in his gold-coloured galvanised steel coffin.
More than 1,000 people crowded the street outside while the Bishop of Leeds led a requiem mass as Yorkshire's way of saying goodbye to one of its favourite sons.
The white Yorkshire roses on his coffin were joined by a floral tribute spelling out 208 in the shape of the old Radio Luxembourg logo, the station that launched his career.
It was a reminder that, in life, Savile was an instantly recognisable celebrity.
From the earliest days of commercial radio to Radio 1, the first and last editions of Top of The Pops, and Jim'll Fix It, his career spanned the decades.
He was also an accomplished athlete and a philanthropist who raised tens of millions of pounds for charity.
He worked tirelessly as a volunteer in hospitals, including the Leeds General Infirmary where porters stood outside in silence as his cortege passed by.
When it arrived at the cathedral the crowds burst into spontaneous applause.
Among the congregation of civic dignitaries, family and friends, were old colleagues from show business including fellow DJ Mike Read and boxer Frank Bruno.
The funeral followed a bizarre day when the coffin lay in state in the bar of a Leeds hotel with 4,000 people turning up to see it.
Sir Jimmy's burial takes place in Scarborough on Thursday on what will be the third and last day of an extraordinary farewell.
There will be another procession, this time along the seafront of the resort he made his adopted home, and more crowds wanting to say goodbye.

Christiane Legrand (21 August 1930 – 1 November 2011[1] ) was a French singer.
Legrand was born in Paris, the daughter of film composer Raymond Legrand, who wrote "Irma la Douce."
She studied piano and classical music from the time she was four. Jazz critic and composer André Hodeir discovered her in 1957, and she became the lead singer in the most notable French jazz vocal groups of the 1960s, including Les Double Six.[2]
She was the original lead soprano of the Swingle Singers and was the vocalist who dubbed the part of Madame Emery in Les parapluies de Cherbourg, the music for which was composed by her brother Michel Legrand. She also sang the part of Judith in his Les demoiselles de Rochefort.
Christiane did the French dubbing for the title role of Disney's film Mary Poppins (1964) and leant her talents to numerous other film projects.
Christiane was the featured soprano on the track "Fires (Which Burn Brightly)" on the 1973 Procol Harum album Grand Hotel. Her niece Victoria Legrand is a member of the American indie rock group Beach House.
